Italy is a dazzling country with many popular tourist destinations; from the bustling streets of Rome to the famous Venice canals. Whether you’ve seen the main attractions before or you want to avoid the crowds, heading off the beaten track in Italy is always a great option. Here are four hidden gems that you won’t want to miss on your next Italian adventure!
1. Brescia, Lombardy
Located at the foot of the Italian Alps, Brescia boasts magnificent alpine scenery. Lake Garda is a popular destination, however many of the small towns in the area offer unique charm and gorgeous mountain views; the little town of Collio, for example, has beautiful hikes through the Croce Domini Pass.
2. Polignano a Mare, Puglia
Near the city of Bari, Polignano a Mare is a truly breathtaking hidden gem. The town perches on cliffs towering over the Adriatic sea, and sunbathers can be seen enjoying the peaceful Lama Monachile beach all year round. Make sure you take a walking tour through the streets to see the poetry-inspired street art.
3. Sabbioneta, Mantua
The walled city of Sabbioneta is a relatively unknown World Heritage Site. The town was built in the late 16th Century and it’s architecture and history have been expertly preserved. You will lose yourself in the historic galleries, theatres and churches; this destination is a must-see for any history buff!
4. Ceriana, Liguria
Hidden in the Eastern mountains of Liguria, the historic town of Ceriana is a sight to behold. Built on an ancient Roman fort, Ceriana’s buildings reach to the heavens; you can spend a whole day climbing through the narrow streets and alleyways. Despite its size, Ceriana hosts many festivals, including the International Music Festival of the Earth.
